Anfernee ‘Penny’ Hardaway Is Worth More Than a Penny!!
When I read where former NBA player, turned head coach of the University of Memphis basketball team, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, signed a five year extension deal of 12.25 million dollars to stay on as head coach of the University of Memphis tiger basket ball team I was like, “Damn! That's ALL!?” Former tigers head basket ball coach, John Calipari, damn near made that much in just one year as head coach of the tigers. This was coach Penny's first year as head coach of the, until recently, lackluster University of Memphis basketball team. In his first year as head coach, Coach Penny brought back life and excitement to the team. Most importantly, he brought back wins. To top it all off, Coach Penny recently sent two powerhouse players to the NBA.
When Penny initially signed on last year as the head coach, he reportedly accepted (in my opinion) an extremely low amount of money to resurrect a team that was on life support. He reportedly said it was because of the love of the University and the city of Memphis, which was ok, I guess. However, just keep in mind that the University of Memphis generates MILLIONS of dollars off of basketball alone, thanks to the sweat and tears of the unpaid black players.
Coach Penny has more than proven himself to be great as the head coach in his first year. I just don't think it’s a good look for him to low ball himself in price when he and his talent are worth so much more. I don't think it's a good look for young black men who may be looking up to him to accept such a bottom basement deal. I know he means well and is trying to send out a message of unity in the city of Memphis, but I think it is financially irresponsible to just GIVE AWAY your talent in a capitalist society all in the name of trying to unify a city that's only unified if you are winning games.
As black men, WE have a public responsibility to show our worth
so that young men coming behind us will understand to strive to more than
triple their worth. I appreciate ALL of the giving back Penny has done and
continues to do with the youth in the city of Memphis. I just don't think he
should be displaying this "giving
back" attitude/spirit when it comes to doing BUSINESS with a multi-million dollar corporation called The
University of Memphis. I can almost assure you that NONE of the previous white coaches had that giving back spirit when
they negotiated their multi-million dollar contracts with this corporation.
I know that his name is Penny, but he should not be accepting
pennies when he is obviously worth dollars.
