Is There Gender Bias at Grambling State University? 4/28/2022

In posts on Instagram and in a few of the Grambling State University alumni groups, the 69th Miss Grambling was acknowledged and celebrated and rightfully so. However, I think 69 women to serve as a queen to zero young men ever getting to serve as a king on campus is enough and has gone on for too long. I think it’s past time for this eternally single campus queen position to exist without and campus King or Mr. Grambling position.  I think it is past time that my beloved Grambling State University has an election for a Mr. Grambling State University. In the times that we are currently living in (Diversity and Inclusion) and not already having a Mr. Grambling election is looking like hypocrisy, contradiction, and gender bias on the campus of Grambling State University.

When I was student at Grambling in the day, the thought of a Mr. Grambling election never entered mind and this thought was never introduced by ANYONE in the student body, on the faculty nor by anyone in leadership in the administration just like today it seems. Well as the old saying goes, “When you know better, you do better.”

When I was an undergraduate student at GSU (1989-1994) & graduate student (1994-1996), I did learn about some of the benefits that came along with being elected to the position of Miss Grambling State University. The winner of election received scholarship money, a wardrobe allowance/stipend for appearances at events outside of Grambling State University with the Bayou Classic being one of the major ones,  appearances and/ spotlights on the cover of as well as inside the pages of major Black magazine publications. The Miss Grambling title also afforded the holder of the crown exposure to all types of corporate sponsorship and corporate employment opportunities. Oh and the majority of the money that funds the crown/position of Miss Grambling, which included her elaborate coronation, came directly from fellow students’ fees that’s paid in their tuition.

So, why can’t a black male student be allowed to represent our university in the same capacity as Mr. Grambling State University and get to participate in the exact same benefits as Miss Grambling? Why can’t the coronation be inclusive of a king or Mr. Grambling? I think that a King and Queen of Grambling State University should be celebrated together at the campus coronation that’s usually held in the fall semester. BTW, it is also paid for out of the tuitions of both MALE and female students. Also, they both should have big and beautifully photographed pictures in the year book as well.

A few other HBCUs have actually kept up with the times and have elected Black kings along with their black college and university queens. I really need my beloved alma mater to step up as well. America is already trying to erase the image and the presence of heterosexual, masculine black males. Let’s not help this country push this agenda on our campus.

Let’s to get to work today on making the election of Mr. Grambling a reality by spring time 2023.   #MrGrambling2023    #BlackMalesMatterToo   #RepresentationMatters
